For years, Hollywood has taken one successful movie’s premise, changed one thing, and then released that movie as original. Action movies after Die Hard tried copying it over and over, then John Wick was released and we got several versions of one person against an army. In 2020, the movie Becky was released, asking the question of, what if John Wick was a 14-year-old girl? That movie delivers a wild ride where the titular character Becky (Lulu Wilson) has to defend her home and family from Neo-Nazis, all led by Kevin James. Finally, in 2023, the few fans of this film were given a sequel, The Wrath of Becky. In the first movie, Becky dethrones the King of Queens, but now, in the sequel, how will she cause trouble for Stifler?
The Wrath of Becky picks up two years after the original — Becky has run away from all her foster homes and must find a place for herself and her dog Diego. Upon meeting some white supremacists at the diner she now works at, and causing them trouble, they attack her and steal her dog. The Noble Men run to their leader, Daryl (Seann William Scott), who is none too keen to find out what his friends have done. When Becky finally tracks them down, all hell breaks loose as she gets her revenge.
This movie is a decent followup, and leaves me hoping we get a third, even though I find that unlikely. As I was the only person in my showing, it doesn’t leave me much hope. I was genuinely surprised when this sequel was announced, even though I had been hoping for one. The acting for a movie like this is way better than it deserved. I did feel we could’ve had more time, but I was happy with what we got. The movie delivers fantastic and explosive new kills, and only slightly drags on in some areas. This sequel takes forever to get to the mayhem — when I looked down at my phone for the time, I was surprised how much time was actually left.
Wilson is phenomenal in this role — she seems to be having a lot of fun. Scott is also a treat, and I was glad to see him in a very different role than what I was used to. He almost played his role a little too well, but you could also tell he was just having fun. There is even a surprise appearance from Kate Siegel, which threw me a bit, but she is a great addition to any movie. You can tell how much fun everyone had on set, especially with the movie’s theme, and who some of these characters are. But with the way some things are set up, it leaves you wondering whether what you are seeing is true.
The Wrath of Becky is a lot better than I expected. But be warned: This movie is a hard R for violence, blood, and language. If those things don’t bother you, and you enjoyed the previous movie, then you will definitely enjoy this one.
Score: 6/10
