Admit it. It’s always comforting to watch a TV show with messy characters that make you feel a lot better about your own life. Freeform’s Single Drunk Female continues to be one of those shows.
Last season, fans watched alcoholic Sam Fink’s (Sofia Black-D’Elia) life turn upside down after being forced into court-ordered sobriety. The once reckless party girl moved back home with her overbearing mom Carol (Ally Sheedy). That’s a stressful situation regardless, but it’s even worse for someone who’s just given up alcohol. Luckily, Sam’s sober coach Olivia (Rebecca Henderson), and some old and new friends, help her overcome the inevitable issues that come along with this big life change.
Sam’s growth over the show’s two seasons is apparent. Initially, she struggled to lead an alcohol-free life, but now, she’s solid in her sobriety. But her newfound confidence and stability has made her already tumultuous relationship with her mother worse. She’s also struggling to share the fact that she’s sober with some of her peers. And to top it all off, a very pregnant Olivia is taking time off from coaching, leaving Sam wondering how she’ll be able to navigate life’s challenges. Will she be able to find the inner strength to cope?
Another major change in Season Two is that the show focuses more on the supporting cast of characters. We learn that there’s more to Sam’s bold, fun, and fierce bestie Felicia (Lily Mae Harrington) than good fashion and bar hopping. She’s a dedicated mother and hard worker. And, her other friend Brit (Sasha Compère) isn’t the perfectly put together person she appears to be. She’s got her own set of unhealthy coping mechanisms that don’t involve alcohol.
Season Two of Single Drunk Female has plenty of laughs, entertaining scenes, and meaningful moments. There’s even a clever reference to The Real Housewives of New Jersey fellow Bravo fans will appreciate. However, the storyline just isn’t as strong as its predecessor. Several plot holes, and underwhelming conflict resolutions, contribute to its mediocrity.
The talented cast makes up for the show’s lackluster plot. Black-D’Elia once again shines as the troubled and lovable Sam. Although many of us don’t identify as alcoholics, we can all relate to her the awkwardly charming aspects of her personality. Sheedy has a talent for channeling the most irritating parts of your parents in Carol, but she’ll also remind you of how much you love them. You’ll want to throw your remote at the TV while watching her, and then call your mom to see how she’s doing.
Overall, despite its shortcomings, Season Two of Single Drunk Female is a fun, lighthearted watch. It’s a great show to binge on a lazy weekend, or to watch while unwinding after a long day of work, with a beverage (alcoholic or non-alcoholic) of your choice.
Score: 5/10
