Power Book III: Raising Kanan, based on Curtis Jackson’s character from the original Power series, Kanan Stark (Mekai Curtis), finished its second season in a wild showdown and another cliffhanger. The series takes place in the ‘90s in Southside Jamaica Queens, New York. This season adds more development and layers to each character for viewers to better understand them. Some relationships break down, but the relationship between Marvin and Jukebox is on the brink of making amends, and hopefully, it will grow for the better come Season Three.

The season finale does an excellent job of closing some storylines and opening some new ones. The finale has everything it should have, and the presence of Kanan’s Queenpin Mother, Raquel (Patina Miller), makes everything better. The shootout scenes in the finale are a masterful Power fashion. In the Power universe, no one is safe; anyone can bite a bullet.

Kanan’s uncle Marvin (London Brown) shows a lot of growth this season, being more thoughtful with his choices, controlling his anger, and making efforts to rekindle his troubled relationship with his daughter, Jukebox (Hailey Kilgore). Fans get to see more of why Jukebox became so cold-blooded in the original Power series; she had faced numerous traumatic experiences that could break anyone into a downward spiral.

This season shows that you could even have disagreements with your loved one through the fracturing of Kanan and Raq’s relationship. Raq’s constant lying has led Kanan not to trust her, and now he wants to find his own path. The thing is, he is using Raq’s business to start the direction he wants. Without Raq, there is no business for Kanan to inherit.

All the main characters bring range to their characters. We await Season Three with a potential romance, new villains, and more twists and turns.

Score: 10/10
