Today is Deer Day in Michigan. November 15th, the day that people can finally point their rifles at the antlered creatures and then widely miss them only to scare them into oncoming fenders across the state. Admittedly I’m not a hunter (no moral objections, only practical ones), but the fact that my boys have today AND TOMORROW off of school for the opening of rifle season strikes me as a bit over the top. Of course everyone throughout the Midwest is a little culture blind to it, but can you imagine how we would feel if we found out that in California kids get the day off of school for Oscar nominations, or the first 2 days of “Plastic Surgery Season”? Just a thought.
Let’s Roll…
TV
Marie Osmond is back on Dancing with the Stars after her dad passed away last week. She is quoting Ecclesiastes as her inspiration as she randomly opened to the part about “a time to mourn and a time to dance” At the risk of sounding callous wouldn’t this be more of the latter? Isn’t the point of this passage that we should be willing to endure the seasons of our lives and that things are always changing? I don’t know. I know it’s not my place to judge (although the same scripture does mention there being a time for throwing stones) and I imagine in the same situation I would probably do the same thing. It just seems a weird scripture to use for justification, though it’s nice to see the scriptures get some props.
Movie
Got my first glimpse of marketing for the new Get Smart movie today. I think the poster looks absolutely amazing. Simple, yet conveys exactly the right feel. I still think Carell is the perfect choice for Maxwell Smart and can’t wait to see what he does. Here it is:
Arrested Development is back! No, sorry, the Bluths won’t be showing up in your TV listings again. The mid 90s hip hop act that tried to show that their genre of music could actually be positive has decided to reappear. If you remember any of their tunes it would probably be the instantly catchy “Tennessee” which I still think was way ahead of it’s time (10 points to anyone who can name their other two Top 10 hits). After a decade off (well not really off, just away from the US) to let the times catch up they have now just released a state side album called “Since the Last Time”. You can check out more and listen a bit at their official Website.
Game/Tech
Wife O’ Dice and the boys surprised me yesterday with Super Mario Galaxy, the latest from America’s favorite plumber, and it is astonishing! Right now, I have to say (and I know it’s partly because I’m geeked and you will think I’m crazy) it is the best video game I have ever played. Not only did I get the game but because she pre-ordered it I also got this cool Super Mario Galaxy collectors coin and Mario himself (voice actor Charles Martinet, and yes I did know that name without looking it up) gave me a phone call. One of the many things I love about the game itself is that it allows a second player to “help” by stunning enemies and gathering “star bits”. Zack and Wiki did something similar and I love this new trend that lets parents and kids work together in this way. If you’ve got a Wii, hook me up with your Wii number and I’ll send you my star progress (I’m sure you are dying to know.)
Faith/Culture
This article caught my eye today, especially after posting about this one only a few days ago. Sigh.
Randomness
Saw that the AP withdrew and corrected the Paris Hilton Drunk Elephant thing today. So something I posted as ironic because I couldn’t believe how much the truth sounded like a joke becomes doubly ironic as the truth is that it probably was just a joke. I feel as if the universe might collapse on itself from the sheer weight of all that irony (there is an irony/ivory headline joke in there somewhere but I don’t have the motivation to find it). Gotta love the internet.
Getting opening day off is not much different than scheduling fall break around the Covered Bridge Festival. I always thought that was odd.
Get smart looks to be perfect in every way.
