My favorite has always been Sweetums, I think because we’re so much alike.

“Muppets Most Wanted” brings Kermit and the gang back for another adventure together, this time through an international tour that intersects with a series of mysterious robberies thanks to a Kermit look alike named “constantine”.   Ricky Gervais, Tina Fey and Ty Burrell play some of the major human roles with many other celebs of course popping in for the obligatory cameos. It was only a couple years ago that the Muppets relaunched to much fanfare and success, and I’m sure that Most Wanted aims to carry on that hallowed tradition.  And it does… for the most part.

Seriously, all the things you know and love from these movies are still here, the aforementioned celebrity cameos, the talking to the audience,  the inside movie references, and of course the silly songs.  And they all scratch that wonderful nostalgia itch for all things Muppet.  I Mean seriously, it’s hard to watch Kermit and the gang and not have fun.  And if you’re a fan of the series you’ll also catch a lot of wonderful inside jokes, which is probably my favorite thing about Most Wanted.  I’m not completely sure if this was the first Muppets movie you’d ever seen if they would land, but I loved it.  Also I really feel like Ricky Gervais is perfect for this universe and adds so much to the proceedings.  Watching him fully embrace the silliness of the Muppet universe  was all kinds of amazing.  And that’s really the best word to describe the movie, it’s just silly, and anarchy of silliness which is really fun but also gives the movie freedom to do anything it so pleases.

Which when you think about it actually sets a pretty low level of difficulty., and that is my main issue with it.  There’s not really much under the silliness.  Sure it’s fun and funny, but where is the heart and even depth that some of the others have had? I’m just not seeing it here.  Now, that doesn’t make it bad it just makes it incomplete. To be honest, I also thought the songs were more hit and miss in this one with a couple of them leaving me completely uninterested, and some of the cameos in this one were just plain lazy.  Again, the movie doesn’t need these things to be perfect to succeed, but it keeps the film from attaining that next level like it’s predecessor.

At the end of the day, Muppets Most Wanted is another fun return to the universe of the Muppets, The joke a second pace should keep you interested and smiling, even if there isn’t much else behind the punch lines.  I say its worth a healthy B+
