Linoleum asks two big questions: What do you want to be when you grow up, and how do we process it when our dreams don’t come true? The story follows Cameron (Jim Gaffigan) and his family. Cameron’s adult life has not turned out the way he thought it would. He has always dreamed of being an astronaut, but in reality, he is the host of a failing children’s science show. On top of that, he and his wife (Rhea Seehorn) are considering divorce. When a rocket suddenly falls from the sky into his back yard, Cameron’s dream is renewed once again, and he sets out to fix up the rocket and do something fantastic.

Gaffigan really gives a phenomenal lead performance in this. He’s the emotional fulcrum of the movie, and he mixes in comedy at just the right times. For me, Gaffigan has always been a pleasant surprise when he shows up in movies, but I really didn’t know he had this type of range. Katelyn Nacon is another big standout. She plays Cameron’s daughter, and acts as a vehicle through which many of the characters process their emotions.

This film is written and directed by Colin West, and I have to say, I am pleasantly surprised. I think the ending gets a little muddled, but I really appreciate him going for it. There’s real emotion and charm that bleeds through the script and onto the screen. The direction is well done as well, and shows true potential, as this is only West’s second feature film. Each actor seems clear on the type of movie they are making, which is so critical in indie films like this one.

My problems with the film come in the 20 minutes where it really loses momentum. The ending, and how much that means to your overall movie experience, will determine your mileage with something like this. Even though it isn’t a perfect wrap up, this film still has so much style and vulnerability.

I’m glad that Hulu picked this movie up to give more people a chance to see it. Definitely do yourself a favor and check this one out if your looking for something unique.
