It’s been an interesting journey for the DCEU over the past 7 years, so to see it slowly get better moving forward is great for it’s fans. I never thought the Director of Lights Out and Annabelle Creation would be able to pull off such a heartwarming superhero flick, but that’s exactly what we get here. Zachary Levi is so fun as Shazam and has great chemistry with his foster brother (Jack Dylan Grazer). One of the best parts of Shazam is how much fun these characters have while interacting with one another. DC has greenlight a sequel with the same cast and Director, so here’s to hoping for a great series of fun films.
After Jordan Peele showed us how great he is at working behind the camera in 2017s Get Out, needless to say that many of us, including myself were very excited to see what he’d do next. So in 2019, he brought us… Us. I feel that most forgot about this movie coming out back in 2019 because it was released so early in the year. Lupita Nyong’o was snubbed for an Oscar this year, that’s just how I feel about it. Her performance is so great, her being able to play a strong protective mother, but then also easily switching to this aggressive tether character is what makes me enjoy Us the most. It’s hard for me to forget this one.
This was an interesting theater experience for me as I’ve almost always known some info on the film I’m about to go see. But this time, I went in so blind that I didn’t even look at a poster before hand. Aside from that, I’m glad to tell you that this is one of the greatest original thrillers with a unique concept that I’ve ever seen in a while. I love that this movie wastes almost no time getting to the point, and kicks off almost immediately without feeling like there’s so much exposition being thrown at you. If you’re looking for an underrated recent gem, look no further than Ready or Not.
When a Breaking Bad movie was first announced in 2018, I was very much against the concept as I felt there was no need. Skip to now, and El Camino is one of my favorites of the year. Aaron Paul continues to give such a good performance as the iconic Jesse Pinkman all these years later. I almost thought there was no reason to revisit this character, but I think Vince Gilligan does a fantastic job at putting a bookend on this journey that you can choose to watch or ignore. I just hope these two reunite to make more stuff, because they clearly have fantastic results when working together.
Another surprise for me. I’m not the type to usually enjoy murder mysteries, but knives out definitely got me. I doubt I would’ve seen this if Rian Johnson wasn’t attached, but because I loved The Last Jedi, and Looper I felt that I should. There isn’t much I feel that I can say that you haven’t heard about this movie yet, but I really enjoyed myself. This of course has a great Star studded cast and has put Ana de Armas on my Radar moving forward. For a guy who doesn’t enjoy murder mysteries much, this is definitely a huge recommend.
I was a bit scared for this movie to come out leading up to it’s release. I wasn’t sure if a Joker standalone movie could work. I absolutely love Joaquin Phoenix’s performance here and think that he’s truly worthy of winning Best Actor during the Oscar’s. I think he did exactly what Jared Leto was trying to do without going overboard. Almost every bit of this film works for me, and seeing one of my favorite villains of all time get this level of praise in a standalone film gives me such a warm feeling. I wouldn’t want this movie any other way.
Going into Avengers Endgame on opening night is something I don’t think I’ll ever get to experience again. I wasn’t in a auditorium watching a movie, I was in an arena. Seeing the main characters of this franchise finally getting their storylines wrapped up in such a satisfying matter with so much going on is something I was skeptical about going in. It feels to me that the Russo brothers nailed this films execution.
I can’t believe it took me this long to realize how good of an actor Adam Driver is until Marriage Story but I’m glad this is the film that opened my eyes to it. Marriage Story is a film I only plan to revisit before the Oscar’s because of how crushing it truly is. Divorce isn’t a fun or entertaining thing, and this film does it’s job at showing how messy things can get in the process due to the legal system alone. Even though it’s a hard watch, I still recommend it for at least one viewing for the performances alone.
Surprised? So am I, but that’s what happens when you end up having an emotional connection to a film. Jessica Rothe gives an underrated performance as she’s easily the reason both of these films work for me as good as they do. HDD1 was a horror flick that had fun elements, but seeing it make this turn to comedy is a delight as it’s able not to take itself so serious. I hope this gains a cult status moving forward as it’s just so much fun.
When I saw Thor Ragnorock back in 2017, I was immediately ready to see anything Taika Waititi has any involvement in and JoJo rabbit is already one of my top 10 movies of the 2010s. One of the best aspects is how he blends Comedy with Serious moments throughout. I was expecting a fun satire that takes place in a word war 2 era, but I was even more delighted by the result of blending hilarious comedy with well written moments between characters that reflects on how grim our world’s history used to be. I cannot wait to get a hold of this movie on blu ray, and I hope it wins some at this year’s Oscar’s.
