Somebody get Kevin Hart a big pen cause I have a feeling he’s going to be signing some big paychecks.

“Ride Along” stars Kevin Hart and Ice Cube (Are we all still ok with this? a grown man named ice cube? everyone? ok, just wanted to make sure.) Anyhow. Yes, Kevin Hart and Ice Cube as prospective brother in laws with one putting the other to the test of a full day in the police force. And then? Hijinks ensue!

All right, I’ll admit it. I thought this movie was really funny, in both concept and execution. Now, of course, almost all of this is due to the incredible energy and sense of humor of one Mr. Kevin Hart, who bounces around this story with the kind of manic energy usually reserved for my 9 year old after drinking a caffinated beverage and diggin in to playing some Smash Brothers Brawl. But I mean, seriously, the dude is hilarious. I’m not sure how much of his stuff is improv and how much is completely scripted, but either way I was laughing through quite a bit of this movie. Which is a good thing, considering everything else about the film is the definition of mediocre.

The plot, the other actors, the buddy cop stuff. It just all feels like we’ve been here before and that there is nothing new or interesting to move us along. Which basically means when you aren’t laughing everything feels run of the mill, or paint by numbers. Plus Ice Cube just feels like he can’t quite keep up with everyone around him in the acting department. Although I did chuckly a little bit to my self everytime he yelled. “Freeze!”… You know… because he’s Ice Cube… and he said freeze. Oh and one more thing, If you’ve been watching over in this corner, Congratulations! You’ve already seen the entire plot of the movie! Again, let’s all just stop watching trailers, maybe Hollywood will get the hint and quit giving everything away in their promotional material. Of course, I say this, and then Super Bowl Sunday happens and I’ll be slobbering over every preview shown during the big game. I’m such a hypocrit.

At the end of the day, Ride Along is a been there done that buddy cop caper with some great humor and not much else, but if the goal of a comedy is just to make you laugh this one might do the trick, I say C+
