You know how your employer will withhold money to pay your taxes, is there anyway we can do the same thing for families who have to see every Disney movie that comes out 16 times?

“Big Hero 6” is the latest gem from Disney animation this time about a kid named Hiro who finds himself at the center of a world of invention and science, and a group of friends who have to join together to stop an intimidating threat to their city. It’s part superhero tale, part message movie, part action film, and all awesome. Big Hero 6 is a complete blast.

Let’s start where the movie really shines, the imagination. Right from the start we are drawn into a future world where anything is not only possible, but likely. If you can think it, you can probably build it, and these characters are building some pretty cool things. One of which is the giant marshmallow like robot you may have seen in the trailer that practically steals the show. Seriously, Baymax is the best. His role as the gentle spirit amidst this tale is crucial to not only the wonderful humor and joy of the film but also the heart of the message about revenge and healing. He is the glue that holds the whole thing together, and the scotch tape that covers any holes that might spring up. It was love at first fist bump. Not that the other characters aren’t well used and fun too, really the entire crew seems to be a perfect collection of personalities, gifts, and inventiveness to add more action and humor exactly where it’s needed. Seriously, this is just a well crafted story. Disney is really firing on all cylinders these days, and they get how to hold attention while at the same time balancing action and emotion as well as message and plot. There wasn’t a second of this movie that I didn’t feel invested, whether it was laughing at the incredible comedic timing or feeling the emotions as this boy Hiro dealt with anger, loss, hurt and healing. I was along for this journey every step and had a blast getting there. And I haven’t even mentioned the incredible animation, or the wonderfully choreographed action scenes, both breathtaking and adding to the overall experience to be had here. Including the now obligatory character goes flying scene that have been a staple of animated action since Avatar showed us how beautiful they were in 3D.

And I guess that’s the one negative I would have about Big Hero 6, we’ve seen much of this before, and it sticks to a pretty tried and true formula, meaning there isn’t a lot that happens that is particularly surprising or new. There’s even a twist that seems a bit telegraphed for my taste, but honestly I was having way too much fun to really care all that much. You see there’s a slight difference in my mind between following a well executed formula and being overly formulaic, and Big Hero 6 is clearly the former not the later.

Overall, Big Hero 6 is some of them most fun I’ve had in a theater all year. The heart, the humor, the action, and the story all work seamlessly together to create a beautiful and exciting tale about the power of what it means to truly heal. Even if the structure is one we’ve seen before, I still think it’s worthy of a fist bump, and a solid A.
